Tough conditions in a beautiful environment

Working in Sweden is hard when your projects starts in October 2010 and is scheduled to end in April of 2011. Despite the cold winter with temperatures mostly around -10°C this project was delivered on time. globe-PM was in charge of all local procurement as well as contract management with local suppliers and subcontractors.

Pouring Hot Concrete into ice-cold formwork

Due to the cold weather it was not sufficient to use warmed-up concrete, especially for the thinner parts like columns or walls. In Sweden it is usual to use heating cables that are mounted directly in between the reinforcement bars. The hot cables keep the concrete as well as the formwork warm enough to avoid cracks from internal tension.

Machines at their limits

With temperatures of -20°C and more (our measured maximum was -27°C) some machines reached their limits in reliability. Logistics was a key issue in Sweden, as the German contractor had to decide whether to bring equipment from Germany or to buy or rent it in Sweden, which was not always easy due to a very dynamic construction market with limited resources. The soil in Sweden was another problem as water emerged very quickly and froze to thick ice layers over night collecting everything it had been in touch with.
